Dougal's Den Blog
Welcome to day four of our Pets win Prizes Advent Competition today it's the turn of the kitty cats, did you know that we have a cat department down in Barkers Basement in the shop? We have a great range of cat toys, treats , collars ,beds and we stock Lily's Kitchen , Eden and Applaws cat food. We have two cats of our own, they don't get much of a mention on our blog as we generally have to keep them apart from the dogs as Zack the boy is semi feral and quite scared around dogs. But they do have their own place inside and also an outside fancy pants cat house so they can enjoy the garden and have a place to escape to when the two terrors are charging around.
They have recently been sampling some of the new range of Applaws cat pots and I have to say they love them. There are a range of flavours for chicken and fish lovers and they really do look and smell good enough to eat. We always noticed that with some other brands of cat food our two would not touch the fish flavours but if we opened a tin of tuna they were standing watching to see if any was coming their way. When we open one of these little pots for them they go crazy and they absolutely love all of the flavours. We decided to stock this range in the shop as they complement the other high quality foods like Eden and Lily's Kitchen, we believe in knowing what is in the food we feed our pets and all of these ranges have clear labelling and you can actually see what is in the food when you open them. So today's competition is for a sample pack of six Applaws cat food pots, and if you are the lucky winner we are sure your cat will love them as much as ours do. All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is post a picture of your pretty kitty cats on our Facebook Page ( you have to like our facebook page as well so we can get in touch with you if you are the winner! ) then just post your pic on our page and we will select the winner from the entries received. We will contact the winner via facebook and request contact details so we can post out the prize. The rules You can post more than one picture ( that's more chances to win). The competition runs from 00.01am on the 4th December to Midnight on the 4th December. Competition open to UK residents only. No alternative prize is available, but we have daily competitions in the run up to christmas so keep checking our blog and our facebook page where we will be posting details of each of the daily competitions.
Day three of our Pets win Prizes Advent Competition, we are always very busy on a tuesday in the shop as it is our regular delivery day for customer orders. This week we have mainly been ordering dog coats, everyone seems to be getting ready for a very cold winter so its good to know there will be some warm and cosy pooches. We love having dogs in for a dog coat trying on session, it really is the best way to make sure you get the best fit for your dog, unfortunately dog coat manufacturers do not have a standard approach to sizing, and there are different styles which suit some dog shapes better than others. Then of course you have to consider how easy it is going to be to get the coat on and off the dog. Some dogs hate having anything placed over their heads so if your dog is one of them then you are better going for a style that you place on the dogs's back an then fasten around their neck with a strap ( these are usually velcro) and around their tummy with another strap. This kind of coat does not give a lot of under belly coverage, so if you are trying to keep your pooches under belly clean and dry then the over the head types usually have a belly band which provides a measure of coverage depending on the design. We have over 20 dog coat designs in the shop in a range of sizes and if you want a specific design we can usually order them in within a week if we do not have the one you are looking for. We offer less choice on the website at the moment, we are happy to take telephone orders if you know the make and size you need. So onto the competition for today....today's prize is a £15 voucher dog coat of your choice, and all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is post a picture of your dog on our Facebook Page in their most warm and cosy outfit ( you have to like our facebook page as well so we can get in touch with you if you are the winner! ) then just post your pic on our page and we will select the winner from the entries received. We will contact the winner via facebook and request contact details so we can post out the prize. The rules You can post more than one picture ( that's more chances to win). The competition runs from 00.01am on the 3rd December to Midnight on the 3rd December. Competition open to UK residents only. No alternative prize is available, but we have daily competitions in the run up to christmas so keep checking our blog and our facebook page where we will be posting details of each of the daily competitions. The Voucher is only available as payment or part payment for a dog coat, if the coat costs less than £15 the remainder can be used against anything else in our shop. If the coat costs more than £15 then the winner will need to pay the difference.
Welcome to day two of our pets win prizes advent competition. We had a super busy day in the shop yesterday saying hello to new and regular visitors to the Sunday Supplement Market in Leek. If you like going shopping with your dog then Leek is a great place because there are oh so many dog friendly places, shops, pubs and cafes where you and your four leggers are more than welcome.
The most popular toy in the shop yesterday was the mini invincible santa, he really is super cute and he has an ingenious squeaker inside, not only is it quite loud, it will also carry on squeaking even if your dog manages to puncture it. ( However if your dog chooses to nibble the fabric and you let the dog actually chew the squeaker its not so invincible and it will end up going to dog toy heaven). For a chance to win one of these lovely little toys for your pooch, all you have to do is post a comment on our blog telling us the most unusual place you have ever visited with your dog. We will pick a winner and contact them via our blog. Oh and if you are thinking of visiting the Leek Sunday Supplement Market , there is an extra one on December 15th from 10.30 to 3.30 where you will find lots of great gift ideas for friends and family. The rules You can post more than one comment ( that's more chances to win), on and due to the amount of spam comments we get on our blog we do have to pre approve all comments so don't worry if yours does not show up immediately, give us a chance to approve them! The competition runs from 00.01am on the 2nd December to Midnight on the 2nd December. Competition open to worldwide entrants. No alternative prize is available, but we have daily competitions in the run up to christmas so keep checking our blog and our facebook page where we will be posting details of each of the daily competitions.

As many of you know we have a lovely little shop in Leek in Staffordshire as well as a website and some of you might also know that we were the people who set up Dog Friendly Leek ....Leek is exceptionally dog friendly with over 60 shops, cafe's and pubs with the woof factor. We define the woof factor as places which allow you to enjoy mooching with your pooch, so if you come to Leek your dog and you will be welcome in lots of places. But we have a complaint...... We recently invested in a very posh dog topiary frame, a lovely little scottie dog and after several attempts and help from Possibilities florists we filled said dog with some gorgeous moss. We decided to trial the moss as we expected it might not last unless misted with water every day, and also we are really not sure how it will survive a Leek winter. ( In case you were not aware, the Leek to Buxton road is one of the first to be closed in winter!) What I did not expect was to have to worry about how long little Hamish ( that's his name) would last if the local dogs peed on him. Let me explain... Tonight when I closed up I went to pick up the little dog, loving stuffed with moss, purchased from a local florist and next to his face, no actually dripping down his face into a nice yellow pool was yes you guessed it dog wee. No I don't know about you but when I take my dogs for a walk, both boys of the leg cocking variety I am really careful about where I let them have a wee. Hedge in the field, Lamp post, bush on the canal path, a tree in the middle of the woods, but never and I mean NEVER on a decorative topiary dog placed outside a doggie boutique. Or on a hedge belonging to someone else, basically I am very very careful in public places. I have spoken to other local shop keepers and it seems our dog pee incident is not the only crime to have been committed in our dog friendly town...bay trees, potted plants, and wooden furniture are just some of the items which have been liberally sprayed with the dog scented yellow stuff. So this is a plea to all dog owners....when you put on the lead please do not disengage your brain...think that the thing that your dog might be peeing against might
- belong to someone else
- have to be picked up by someone else
- or be part of someone's garden
I rinsed little Hamish off before I brought him inside but I fear that the damage may have been done now some local doggie was allowed to pee in his face. Please do your bit to keep Leek Dog Friendly by making sure you pay attention to where your pooch spends a penny!
We often get questions in the shop about dog training in and around Leek, we are happy to recommend organisations which we have personal experience of, in fact we would not think of recommending them if we did not know them individually. Love Walkies which is owned by K-9 behaviourist Rachel Trafford holds classes every Sunday at Longsdon Village Hall. Rachel has over 20 years working experience with dogs initially as a veterinary nurse and then with greater focus on re-training and re-homing rescue or “difficult” dogs. If you want to find out more about the dog training offered by Rachel and her team then why not pop along to the Love Walkies website.
We had a fab time at the weekend with all of the cake baking and selling ( and tasting) for Moorlands Rescue. Special thanks to everyone who made the cakes and to those who purchased the lovely cakes. So far we have raised a total of £176.00 for Moorlands Rescue who are a new group specially formed to create a fund which can be used to help existing local charities and local individuals who may under exceptional circumstances require help with an animal in their care. We decided to keep the Raffle going until Sunday 6th May so we can hopefully raise a few more pennies! There are some great prizes up for grabs...take a look at these:-
How do you fancy winning this gorgeous Chocolate Easter Chicken? He is 750g of Yummy Caramel Milk and inside he has salted popcorn, what a great combination. Obviously he is for you and not your doggie! But we will include some non chocolate treats from Pet Munchies for your pooch or cat as well!
All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is to post a picture of your pooch or cat enjoying the easter break on our facebook page or email it to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will pop it on facebook for you.
You can enter as many times as you like and share with your friends so they can enter too.
The competition runs from Good Friday until Midnight on Easter Monday, we will pick the winner on Tuesday morning and get the chocolate chicken in the post Tuesday afternoon.
